When I was 11 years old, my mother, Ulla-Carin Lindquist, lost her life to ALS. ALS, otherwise known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a fatal degenerative motor neuron disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It involves the progressive degeneration and eventual paralysis of the muscles, affecting vital functions such as eating, speaking, moving, and, eventually, breathing. Unfortunately, there is no cure for ALS and research is very limited.
My mother was a news anchor for Sweden’s national news station, SVT. During her fight against the disease, she focused her energy in bringing attention to ALS through her documentary, My Fight Against Time, and her book, Rowing Without Oars. Now, 14 years later, I represent my late mother through Sweden’s largest ALS foundation, Ulla-Carin Lindquist’s Foundation for ALS Research. Over the years, I have been inspired by several individual initiatives for raising awareness and fundraising that have successfully resulted in substantial funds to the foundation.
Therefore, this summer, from June 14th, I will be biking from Vancouver, Canada, through the West Coast U.S. states of Washington, Oregon, and California, to the Mexican border in Tijuana, and I will be donating all proceeds to research through my mother’s foundation. During this journey, I hope to meet scientists, other foundations, and participate in local ALS events.
Any contribution, big or small, is deeply appreciated and makes a lot of difference. Please visit my fundraiser on Facebook Donations to make your contribution.
My name is Pontus Löfgren, and I am a 25 years old Swede raised in Stockholm. I have a Bachelors in Business Administration from Lund University. During the year of 2017-2018, I completed my reserve-officer training in the Swedish Army, and I am now a Deputy Platoon Commander in a part-time mechanized reconnaissance platoon.
Two years ago, I spent a year of exchange in California during which I discoverd the magnificant Pacific Coast, which I am very excited to experience up close from my bike this summer. Apart from biking, I love traveling, being outdoors and sailing.
